West Ham trio Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Konstantinos Mavropanos sustain injuries during FA Cup draw

By Roshane Thomas

West Ham United have been handed injury concerns with Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Konstantinos Mavropanos sustaining knocks in their 1-1 third round FA Cup draw against Bristol City.

Paqueta lasted only 14 minutes having aggravated the calf injury, which ruled the attacking midfielder out of the goalless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. Paqueta initially suffered the injury during the warm-up before the 2-0 win away to Arsenal and was substituted in the 33rd minute.

The Brazil international provided the assist for Jarrod Bowen’s goal against Bristol City and both will be an injury doubt for the replay against the Championship side.

“I’m more disappointed about Paqueta, we got him back and then he’s out after five or ten minutes,” said Moyes. “We were all of the understanding that things were fine because he trained yesterday. But obviously something must be annoying him and it’s the same injury.”

Bowen, who scored His 14th goal in all competition this season, had to be assisted off the field by two members of the physio team having injured his left ankle. It is another blow for Moyes who is without Mohammed Kudus because of Africa Cup of Nations duty with Ghana, while Michail Antonio, who has been sidelined since November with a knee injury, suffered an injury setback in training last Friday.

“It’s that time of the year, you can get injuries,” said Moyes. “We’ve seen it over the years. We’ve had a really good clean bill of health for the most part of the season. We’ll hopefully find they’re okay but we have to wait and see.”

Mavropanos sustained a knock when he landed awkwardly following a contested header with Bristol City forward Tommy Conway.

The Athletic takes a look at what may be in store during the rest of the January transfer window.

Last three January spends

January 2023

In: Danny Ings (£12million),

Out: Craig Dawson (£3.3million), Darren Randolph (free), Conor Coventry (loan)

January 2022

In: None

Out: Frederik Alves (£1million), Conor Coventry (loan)

January 2021

In: Said Benrahma (£20million), Jesse Lingard (loan), Frederik Alves (£1million)

Out: Sebastien Haller (£20million), Robert Snodgrass (£100,000), Winston Reid (loan)

How much money is likely to be available?

West Ham are operating with a limited budget, which could hinder their prospects of signing players this window.

“I don’t think we’ll have much money to spend,” said Moyes. “It will depend on what the outgoings are.”

What are the priority positions and who are the targets?

Given West Ham’s struggles without Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus, Moyes needs to bolster his attacking options. The club’s technical director Tim Steidten has suggested Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn, who previously played for Tottenham Hotspur between 2020 and 2022.

Stuttgart forward Serhou Guirassy has been linked with a switch to West Ham but Bergwijn’s experience of playing in the Premier League makes him the preferred option. But with West Ham having to sell before they can buy this window, an offensive arrival will be contingent on whether they can move on the out-of-form attacking trio of Said Benrahma, Maxwel Cornet and Pablo Fornals.

West Ham are also short of options in defence following Thilo Kehrer’s loan move to Monaco, Nayef Aguerd out on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Morocco and now Konstantinos Mavropanos sustaining an injury against Bristol City. If Mavropanos’ injury is worse than first feared, this leaves captain Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna as the only recognised options at centre-back.

Peterborough United’s Ronnie Edwards, 20, remains on West Ham’s radar. Mark Phillips, formerly the assistant coach for the under-18s and now assistant to sporting director Mark Noble was previously assigned with scouting the young defender. Bayer Leverkusen defender Odilon Kossounou was considered an option by the recruitment team but with the defender at AFCON with Ivory Coast, West Ham will explore other defensive targets.

Moyes’ recruitment team consists of Steidten, head of recruitment Rob Newman, European scout Georges Santos and first-team scout Adam Clarke among others, but it is largely Moyes, Steidten and majority shareholder David Sullivan who discuss potential incomings.

Who could be on their way out?

Aguerd is the subject of interest from an unnamed Saudi club and Italian sides AC Milan and Roma. But is unlikely the centre-back will leave West Ham this month. The defender received offers from a club in the Saudi Pro League and two unnamed European suitors last summer.

West Ham have not received any approaches from Saudi clubs for Said Benrahma, but will listen to offers in the January transfer window. The 26-year-old, whose contract expires in 2026, has featured sporadically this season, having only registered one assist across 24 appearances. He was an unused substitute in the draw against Bristol City. Lyon are said to be interested in signing the attacking midfielder on loan.

Kehrer, 27, has joined Monaco on loan for the remainder of the season and the French side have an €11million (£9.55m, $12.2m) option to buy. The versatile defender had interest from Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt, but wanted to return to France having played for Paris Saint-Germain between 2018 and 2022. Kehrer only played 19 minutes in the league and has been an unused substitute in 14 of West Ham’s 20 league games.

Ben Johnson, 23, is entering the final months of his contract. There has been no progress with talks over an extension. In February 2022, West Ham offered the full-back a six-and-a-half-year contract but failed to reach an agreement. The defender started the goalless draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, but has only made six appearances this season. Johnson had interest from Southampton last summer, but the Championship side were reluctant to pay a high loan fee.

Vladimir Coufal’s agent expressed his frustration at West Ham activating the one-year option in his deal, which runs until the summer of 2025. It was activated based on the number of appearances the right-back has made this season, but Coufal’s representative wanted to negotiate a long-term deal for the 31-year-old right-back.

The club have not received any approaches for Maxwel Cornet. The winger had interest from Everton last summer, but looks set to stay at West Ham for the remainder of the season despite his lack of playing time.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Danny Ings on loan. The 31-year-old striker, whose contract expires in the summer of 2025, has had to settle for a reduced role this season, with the majority of his 18 appearances coming from the bench. It is Ings’ preference to remain in the Premier League and he has no interest in dropping down to the Championship, despite interest from former side Southampton.

Divin Mubama’s long-term future is yet to be determined. The 19-year-old forward is entering the final months of his deal having previously rejected a contract extension. League One side Charlton Athletic have enquired about Conor Coventry’s availability. The 23-year-old midfielder, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is yet to play for West Ham this season.

League Two’s Colchester United are interested in signing Callum Marshall, 19, on loan. The Northern Ireland international has scored 19 goals and registered five assists in just 13 appearances for the under-21s. Meanwhile, Kamarai Simon-Swyer, 21, could be recalled from his loan spell at League Two side Crawley Town due to lack of playing time.
